Kim Marquis voted your Unsung Hero

Charity superwoman Kim Marquis was last night crowned the 2011 Specsavers Unsung Hero after receiving nearly a third of the 800 votes cast.

This was the third year that the public were invited to vote online as well as by post for their favourite nominee – someone who works tirelessly for the local community and the service of others. Mrs Marquis was the outright winner, with votes spread evenly among the remaining shortlisted nominees.

Mrs Marquis, 45, is involved in several charities, including The Pink Ladies, Wigwam, Guernsey Deaf Children’s Society and is also an active participant in an initiative that supports British troops on deployment in Afghanistan.

A mother of four children, including one of whom has Down’s Syndrome, she undertakes all her charity work on a volunteer basis and in the little spare time she has is learning sign language so that she can communicate more easily with the children she works with at the Deaf Society.

Debi Troth, who nominated Mrs Marquis, said: ‘Kim is remarkable, she is always keen to help others and puts everyone else first, she never has any time for herself.’

Another voter said that ‘Kim is a very special lady and so deserves this award. She is truly an unsung hero; there is so much she does that people are unaware of’.

Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins, said: ‘This award has become the voice of the Guernsey people and they have shouted out their chosen winner. We were so pleased to see how many votes were cast this year, as well as the number of initial nominations. It really is a lovely award to be involved with.’

Voting open for your Specsavers Unsung Hero

The shortlist of the Specsavers Unsung Hero Award has been announced and the public are being asked to vote for their winner.  The nominees are Derek Le Boutillier, Kim Marquis, Ian Gaudion, Anne Smith, Mavis Lemon and Lewis Laine.

Twenty islanders were nominated for the award in recognition of the work they do in the island for the benefit of others.  A panel of judges, which included the Bailiff Sir Geoffrey Rowland, Dame Mary Perkins of sponsors Specsavers and chairperson of the Association of Guernsey Charities Kate Raleigh, met to discuss the nominations and the shortlist was decided upon after much deliberation.

‘It is always a difficult task to decide on a shortlist as all of the nominees do a great deal for the island community and are all worthy of an award,’ said Dame Mary. ‘We were amazed again by the commitment of these islanders to enhancing local life, whether it be through charitable work or with youngsters and always quietly behind the scenes, never seeking publicity.  Now it is time for the public to select the person they consider deserves the unsung hero title.’

One week left to nominate your Unsung Hero

Don’t forget!  The closing date for this year’s Specsavers Unsung Hero is the end of this week, Friday 25 November.

“Now in its 13th year, the Specsavers Unsung Hero award does exactly what it says on the tin – recognises those people who give generously and selflessly of their time and efforts for the benefit of others. We are always heartened by the number of entries we receive. This award has become the voice of Guernsey people.” Dame Mary Perkins, Founder and Director, Specsavers

Nominate your unsung hero

ISLANDERS are being asked to nominate their unsung hero, someone who has given selflessly to the local community.

The Specsavers Unsung Hero Award is now in its 13th year and will culminate at next February’s Awards for Achievement gala evening.  It celebrates a person who works, often behind the scenes, for the welfare of others in the local community.  This may be for a recognized association, group or charity, or simply by helping others.

Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins says: ‘When it comes to going through the entries for the Specsavers Unsung Hero award each year, it always amazes me how many people in the island give so generously and selflessly of their time for the benefit of others.

‘The award is really an opportunity to show your appreciation for that person and recognise the difference they make for our local community.’

Guide leader Jenny Falla was one of five shortlisted candidates last year, who went on to win the award after receiving the most votes from the public.  Mrs Falla has worked tirelessly within the girlguiding movement for more than 40 years, becoming the first Bailiwick Commissioner in 2002.

The other short-listed nominees included Joan Ozanne, who has been involved in the arts in the island for more than 50 years; activity nurses at the KEV11 Hospital Shirley Crowson and Patricia Ferbrache; Celia Allen, chair of the Lifeboat Guild and involved with the Samaritans for many years; and Jane Beausire, who has been assisting women undergoing cancer treatments for the last 18 months, helping them with wig choices and styling for hair loss, as well as the use of scarves and make-up tips for eyebrows and eyelashes.

All nominations are carefully considered on an annual basis, so islanders can nominate someone again, but the award must be about community work done in the island.

Nominations should be received by Friday 25 November, then a panel of judges will select a shortlist from which the public will be asked to vote for their winner.  The successful nominee will win the Specsavers Unsung Hero Award trophy, a £3,000 holiday voucher and £1,000 for the charity of their choice.

Forms are available from Specsavers’ office at La Villiaze, call Alex Hanna on 233667 or email alex.hanna@specsavers.com, or available to download on guernseyachievementawards.com.  Forms are also available at various public locations around the island.
